Nordic Walking - Give it a Go

Yahoo!Xtra

Nordic walking is gaining popularity in New Zealand, but what is it exactly and why should you give it a go?

What is it?

Nordic walking is walking with specially designed poles that help encourage a good walking gait and correct posture when done properly. It originated in Northern Europe as off-season training for cross country skiing, which is said to be one of the most complete aerobic fitness activities in the world.

Why you should try it?

* It’s easy – if you can walk, you can Nordic walk. * It’s a total body workout – arms, shoulders, upper chest and back muscles stretch and lengthen with each stride. A great antidote to being hunched over a desk all day. * It burns up to 46% more calories than regular walking. * It takes the pressure off – walking with poles takes the weight off your joints and provides more stability if you need it. * It’s social – Nordic walking is most often done in groups, but there’s nothing stopping you going solo if you prefer.

What do you need?

You’ll need one pair of correctly sized poles. Get advice about the right size for your height and arm length, and most importantly choose poles that feel comfortable.

Technique

Like any activity, the benefits you will get from Nordic walking will depend on your technique. Take the time to get some initial lessons to make sure you are getting the most out the exercise, and that you’re not doing more harm than good.
